Cape Town experienced many breath-taking sporting activities this past weekend as young (and not so young) athletes took it to the sports fields, halls and courts to showcase their talents. Here’s what happened in some of these interesting events…

First off: FOOTBALL. 

It was a big weekend for the local amateur and semi-professional leagues. As South Africans celebrated Mother’s Day, the football community received a Mother’s Day present with a difference, as Chanty Norris jetted off to Lithuania at the weekend to begin her professional football career at FK Saned. Norris, who was a key member of the CR Vasco da Gama team that conquered the Sasol League in the country to earn promotion to the HollywoodBets Super League. What makes her move to Europe even warmer is the fact that she was struggling to raise funds for her flights – and Capetonians, as they have always done, came to her rescue.(Photo: Safa.net)

The boys didn’t let the ladies have all the fun, though. On Sunday, football fans were treated to one of the most bizarre – and epic – matches ever, as Valhalla United fielded only seven players for the entire game as they took on Heath Athletic in the Engen Knockout Challenge preliminary round fixture at Turfhall Sports Complex…and won. And in the evening, Zizwe United won their third ABC Motsepe League Western Cape title, beating FN Rangers 4-3 on penalties in an entertaining playoff clash at William Herbert Sports Ground. Many local football fanatics are hoping it will be third time lucky for Julius Dube’s men at the national play-offs in Rustenburg early next month to realise their dream of joining the big boys in the GladAfrica Championships next season. And Monday night saw Hanover Park crowned as champions of the Safa Cape Town Regional Third Division League on. The Brasse Vannie Park beat title rivals Cape Town City in their own backyard at Malta Park to open a 15-point gap between them and the second-placed Greenwood Athletic with four rounds of matches remaining.(Photo: 021 Fooballers)

In ATHLETICS, it was a historic moment at the University of the Western Cape as the institution hosted its first-ever University Sport South Africa (USSA) Track and Field Championships. Top athletes from 23 universities around the country converged in Bellville from Thursday to Saturday to showcase their talents in the action-pack events. Cape universities performed fairly well as Stellenbosch University finished 5th in the overall medal list, just on top of the hosts as 6th place while the Cape Peninsula University of Technology ended 14th. CYCLING saw the Western Province Cycling Association hosting their first league race in Atlantis League Race 1. It was a chilly start to the day, without a breath of wind.  The event started with the Cat 3s and Women’s races.  Romario Sardinah and Tiffany Keep won these, with McKenzie Pedro taking the U/19 Women. Cat 2 saw a sprint to the line between Oswin Booysen, Michael Viljoen and Ian Naude, with Ozzie taking it by a hair’s breadth. The U/17s and U/19 Development races had Ruan Badenhorst winning the U/17 race and Asakhe Dyantyi winning the U/19 Development race.  Well done to these two youngsters. Cat 1 & U/19 Men’s race was a hotly-contested affair with the bunch staying together for the entire race.  Various riders made short forays off the front but were hauled back in without inflicting any damage.  Shameeg Salie took first from Jaco Venter and Clint Hendricks.
