Basic Info:
As the Western Province Cycling Association (WPCA) puts it on their website, the Western Cape’s true beauty and variety of its terrain and the surroundings have been the solid drive behind the popularity of cycling as a sport in the region. “Add to this the sportsmanship, camaraderie and sheer enthusiasm to take part, compete and dominate in the average South African, and you have a sustainable sport modality destined to succeed”. With a membership of over 20 very active cycling clubs the sport is indeed succeeding. The WPCA is one of the 12 structures that make up Cycling South Africa (CSA), and is responsible for the development and co-ordination of cycling activities such as mountain biking, road, track and scholars racing events. There about 1 500 licensed through CSA and WPCA draws an average 150 cyclist per event in the province.
