When Salt River Blackpool and FC Tafelzucht walk onto the pitch in Manenberg tomorrow morning to open the SAFA Cape Town LFA Promotional Playoffs quarterfinals, both teams will be playing not only for future promotion, but to honour their pasts as well..
For FC Tafelzucht, this is a chance to complete a five-year mission. For Blackpool, it is an opportunity to revive a proud footballing history. But history will count for little on Saturday. What will matter is who wants it more, who handles the pressure better and who can keep their promotion dream alive.
Established in 2013, Tafelzucht have been steadily building towards this moment. After finishing second in the LFA-MP League in 2022 and 2023, they claimed three consecutive league titles between 2024 and 2026. Now, with their five-year project reaching its conclusion, promotion would be the ultimate reward.
For FC Tafelzucht, this game is the culmination of a five-year project.
Tafelzucht Coach Shane Poggenpoel’s charges will arrive in a confident mood, having topped Group A with seven points. They thrashed Dynamos of Mandalay 4-0, drew 2-2 with Robinvale Spurs of Atlantis and dispatched Valencia FC of Simunye 3-0, scoring nine goals in the process.
This is their third consecutive playoff appearance. After falling in the round-robin stage in 2024 and losing to Vasco in the quarterfinals last year, they will be desperate to go further.
But a club with a history stretching back to 1953 stands between them and the semifinals.
Salt River Blackpool are no strangers to success. They won the Regional League in 2007 and earned promotion to the then Vodacom League before selling their franchise to Hellenic. Now they want to climb that ladder again.
Their route to the quarterfinals has been equally eventful. They beat Hustlaz FC 3-0, drew 0-0 with New Stars and edged Cape Town Pirates 2-1. Level on seven points with New Stars, Blackpool secured top spot after winning a coin toss.

Salt River Blackpool are no strangers to success – and they have a lot to prove.
Two victories would secure promotion. And having last featured in the playoffs in 2019, when they exited in the group stages, Blackpool know this is an opportunity they cannot afford to waste.
All in all, the club is cautiously optimistic, but insists it will treat every remaining fixture as a cup final.
Interestingly, the teams have never met in a competitive fixture, adding another layer of intrigue to Saturday’s showdown.
Tafelzucht bring attacking firepower; Blackpool bring history, experience and defensive discipline. Neither side is prepared to make way for the other.
So with community pride and promotion ambitions at stake, expect a battle that goes well beyond 90 minutes – and brings out the best in both sides.
The prediction: Tafelzucht 2-1 Blackpool
This promises to be a challenging match-up, but in the end, we are tipping Tafelzucht to edge this one. Their attacking form, playoff experience and determination to complete their five-year project give them a slight advantage. Blackpool’s defensive resilience and pedigree will make them tough opponents, but Tafelzucht’s firepower could prove decisive.
Kick-off is at 11:00. Stay tuned for more!
