In the world of soccer, tales of young talents rising from challenging backgrounds to grace the grandest stages of the sport are not uncommon. One such inspiring story is that of Tashreeq Matthews, an attacking midfielder currently shining at IK Sirius in Sweden.
Matthews’ football journey commenced at the tender age of four when he joined Rygersdal FC. By six, he had already made a move to Hanover Park FC, which was then known as Premier United. His journey took him through various clubs, including Vasco Da Gama and Ajax Cape Town, where he spent seven memorable years. But it was his bold move to Borussia Dortmund at the age of 18 that marked a turning point.
After leaving Borussia Dortmund, Matthews continued his pursuit of first-team football at Varberg BoIS in Sweden. He spent two years there, but his journey had its challenges.
“I was at Varberg for two and a half years, and got injured the last year I was there. I got back from injury, did not play, and decided to leave Varberg and join Sirius one day before deadline day,” he adds.
This decision to join IK Sirius in Sweden was a pivotal moment in his career.
Matthews, who currently has 10 goals in all competitions in Sweden and six assists in the league, is proving to be a valuable asset for IK Sirius. His ability to contribute both as a goal-scorer and a playmaker on the field has been instrumental in the team’s success.
His playing style reflects his admiration for his footballing role models: “My personal favourite is the Greatest of All Time, Cristiano Ronaldo, but one who I love to watch is Neymar.”
Working Hard, Staying Positive – And Striving For Excellence
It’s clear that Matthews’ determination and adaptability have been key to his success on the football pitch, and his aspirations are clear – play at the highest level, set personal goals each season, and let awards and championships follow.
But like any professional athlete, Matthews has faced his share of challenges.
One significant moment that changed his perspective was a health scare when he underwent an operation on his appendix. “I’m just grateful to be alive,” says the former Varberg BoIS attacker.
It was a wake-up call, a reminder of the fragility of life, and a motivation to make the most of his talent.
The pressure that comes with being a professional footballer is undeniable, but Matthews has a simple philosophy that helps guide him through it.
“Work hard, stay positive, and strive for excellence,” he explains.
Home Is Where The Heart Is: On Coming Back To South Africa
Tashreeq Matthews’ journey serves as a shining example of what can be achieved with talent, determination, and the right mindset. But he’s never forgotten where he’s from.
Hanover Park, often known as a challenging neighbourhood, where the sounds of gunshots has become a normality, holds a special place in his heart. It’s where he first kicked a ball, learned so many of life’s lessons, and drew inspiration from local heroes like Benni McCarthy.
“People know it as the ghetto but I’m proud to be from there, and to see what people go through,” Matthews says. “It gives you more motivation to do better.”
From the streets of Hanover Park to sharing the pitch with international stars, Matthews’ story continues to inspire aspiring footballers and reminds us all that dreams, when pursued relentlessly, can become reality.
Eventually, he says, he’d like to return to South Africa, particularly Cape Town, to finish his football career. It’s a homecoming that many fans eagerly anticipate – but he’s not ready to disclose the club he would prefer in the Mother’s City just yet.
But as Matthews continues to make waves in the football world, we eagerly await the next chapter in his remarkable career – wherever he may be.
