The Engen Knockout Challenge kicked off in sublime fashion on a sunny Friday morning at Langa Stadium, with some of the underdogs causing early upsets.
The likes of Khayelitsha-based Rebels FC, Ulana Soccer Academy of Mandalay and hosts, Wanderers FC, are punching above their weight…and providing great moments for the supporters to remember.
The first round began with Wanderers beating Hellenic FC by a 1-0 scoreline. Thando Gqubusha rose highest and headed the ball straight down into the bottom right corner of the Greek Gods’ goalkeeper from a free kick, giving them the win – and the vital first three points of the tournament.
“It was a tough game, and very tricky,” Thando told Capeat6sport afterwards. “I was a substitute, so I made an impact on the game off the bench. I had to do the job, the coach told me I can win this game for us.”
It’s not the first time that Thando has scored with a header. In fact, it’s become a bit of a habit.
“This is not my first header, I’m used to it, you know. It feels great to score, especially as a super sub.”
“It’s great for the tournament that we won our opening game, and we know the first game is always important.”
The biggest shock of the day came when Stellenbosch FC came up short against Ulana Soccer Academy, losing 1-0 thanks to an impressive goal by Milton Tyongwana.
The Ulana forward was over the moon with his important contribution.
“I’m so excited for what is to come after this win over Stellenbosch, I’m so happy,” said the young striker.
“We know how they play and we just tried – and managed – to keep them out. I can’t explain my feelings after this win, I’m just so excited.”
The Engen Knockout Challenge continues today with some mouth-watering clashes on the cards.
