The Western Province laid down a marker for success on day three in the South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Golf Tournament at King David Golf Club in Mowbray yesterday.

Western Province caused a major upset of this year’s tournament with an emphatic 8.5 – 3.5 victory over defending champions Central Gauteng.

Under pressure to build points and game points after their first round loss to Gauteng North, the local favourites used their rest day to regroup and came into the third round guns blazing.

Western Province dominated the foursomes to take a 3-1 lead and Greg Sheard and Shaun le Roux, playing at eight and seven, kept the momentum alive with 3 & 2 wins.

Riaan Lewis, Adrian Ford and Cameron Johnston racked up 3 more points and Elton James at number two halved with Kevin Sharp to end the Lions’ unbeaten run.

Gauteng North, meanwhile, put pedal to the metal.

The Daisies gunned to double victories in their three-way match, routing Ekurhuleni 7 – 5 and mowing down Free State 8.5 – 3.5. A profitable day catapulted Gauteng North to the top of the log with 10 points and 40 game points.

The Daisies will have a relaxing bye on Thursday, while Central Gauteng will have to keep an eye on the action, having slipped to second on 8 points.

Ekurhuleni downed Free State 8 – 4 to secure their first points in the tournament. Ekurhuleni moved to fourth in the standings behind Western Province, who holds third place with 4 points. Both teams will be hungry to bank more points in round four.

Western Province will tussle with Free State and KwaZulu-Natal and Ekurhuleni goes head-to-head to Southern Cape.
