FC Porto, hailing from Phillipi, has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the Bayhill Premier Cup 2024, remaining undefeated with two consecutive victories under the leadership of Captain Onke Tsweu.
Entering the prestigious tournament fresh from their triumph in the Gareth Ncaca under-20 tournament, their Bayhill Cup journey commenced with a triumphant 2-1 victory over a determined Greenwood Athletic, followed by a thrilling 3-2 win against the combative Hanover Park FC.
FC Porto exudes a winning mentality that seems to be ingrained in their DNA, compelling Cape Town to acknowledge their prowess on the field.
But confidence can only take you so far, and the rest comes down to talent, determination, and – of course – strategy.
“The plan against Hanover Park was to play a bit deep, not too high,” FC Porto’s captain and winger, Onke Tsewu, elucidates. “We tried to manage the game.”
Tsewu also emphasises the importance of teamwork and effective leadership. “You must be able to communicate with others and lead by example.”
Tsewu has his own football influences, naturally.
“My favourite player is someone who is currently without a club,” he notes. “It’s Masibusane Zongo, because I like the way he uses his skill and flair. But my teammates call me Adama Traore, the one that is at Fulham now, because of his physical strength and speed.”
With examples like that, Tsewu envisions a future among football’s elite.
“I see myself playing in the best league in the world, the English Premier League,” said Tsewu.
FC Porto: A Journey of Passion and Determination
Of course, Tsewu has his own admirers – one of whom is Khanyo Majezi, owner, chairman, and coach of FC Porto. The club’s origins can be traced back to 2005, when Majezi established it at the age of 17.
Highlighting Tsewu’s versatility on the field, Majezi acknowledges his technical prowess and enduring stamina, underlining his integral role in FC Porto’s success. He also admires Tsewu’s character, describing him as “a great guy” and a pivotal figure within the team dynamic.
“As a footballer, he brings good energy in my opinion. He is a good quality player who can play as winger and as a number 9 (forward). He is also good technically and never gets tired. He’s been with us for two years now. We got him from a club called onesimo,” Majezi says.
With unwavering dedication, FC Porto has traversed a path defined by resilience and commitment, culminating in their current standing as a formidable contender in the Bayhill Premier Cup.
