Zizwe United’s unsuccessful bid to win promotion to the GladAfrica Championship is bad news – not just for the club, but for the entire Cape Town football sector, as the effects trickle down all the way to the Regional Third Division.
Many football fanatics had high hopes that Zizwe United would be third time lucky at the ABC Motsepe League playoffs this time around – but they were dealt with a massive heartache, crashing out with a 1-0 defeat to Gauteng’s MM Platinum (La Masia) in their second group game yesterday (16 March 2022).
Now they will have to do it all again next season.
And in the meantime, the Nyanga-based Zizwe United’s unsuccessful bid to win promotion to the GladAfrica Championship is bad news, not just for the club or the area, but for the entire Cape Town football sector.
So how does their defeat have ramifications for other football leagues and clubs in the Mother City?
Well, for one thing, it means that Atlantis-based Jomo Powers, who were the only side from the Cape Town region among the five clubs that were chopped from ABC Motsepe League Western Cape, will now officially return to the Regional Third Division League. Should Zizwe have won promotion to South Africa’s second football tier, Jomo would have remained in the Motsepe League as they were third last in their stream.
And if Jomo returns to the third division, that would mean FC Hout Bay, who were provisionally relegated after finishing third last in that league, will now be officially condemned to LFA football, just like Bontehewel’s Bluegum United and Bayview FC of Mitchell’s Plain.
Hout Bay’s only hope of survival lies with Hanover Park, who will do battle in the Western Cape Third Division playoffs in Stellenbosch early next month. Should the Brasse Vannie Park win promotion to ABC Motsepe League, then Hout Bay will remain in the Regional Third Division.
Here’s hoping…
