Amateur sporting activities are back in full swing in Cape Town and fields, courts, community sports halls and many more venues are buzzing with activity – and this weekend will be no exception. So here are some of the most exciting events taking place, from A to Z (or at least R).
ATHLETICS: Student Champions Converge At UWC
With lockdown over(ish), athletics in the Cape has (pardon the pun) hit the ground running. University athletics stars from around the country have converged at the University of the Western Cape for the USSA Athletics Championships. The action-packed event will be concluded on Saturday, and will be used to select athletes who will represent the USSA team for international competitions. Meanwhile, athletic fanatics young and old will be heading to Kraafontein on Saturday for the Easterns 15km road race and 6km fun run/walk. Join in!
CYCLING: Fast & Flat – Or Wine Route Racing?
Want to get out and see more of the many stunning sights the Western Cape has to offer? WP Cycling has you covered. The 4th WC XCO Series race will take place at Laborie Wine Estate in Paarl on 7 May 2022, followed by the 7.7 kilometre Atlantis circuit, which is best described as the fastest, flattest road race in the Cape. The latter is the first of the league races for the 2022 season. Entries for the Youth Ages (U/15, U/17 and U/19) will be accepted for this race.
FOOTBALL: ABC Motsepe League, Engen Knockout Challenge & Mothers Day Madness
As the SAFA Cape Town Third Division League is fast drawing to a close, up-and-coming footballers will be showcasing their skills around the Peninsula in the preliminary round of the 2022 Engen Knockout challenge. But all roads in men’s football lead to William Herbert Sports Ground in Wynberg for the ABC Motsepe League Western Cape play-offs between Zizwe United and FN Rangers. The winners will earn a spot in the national playoffs where the top two teams will bid the semi-professional level goodbye and join the big boys in the GladAfrica Championship. Kick-off is at 15h00. Will it be Zizwe or Rangers? Watch this space.
In women’s football, Mother’s Day on Sunday (you didn’t forget, did you?) will be celebrated in style as HollywoodBets Super League rookies CR Vasco Da Gama and their neighbours at the University of the Western Cape will be involved in a double-header at UWC Sports Stadium. Vasco will kick off the proceedings when they host fellow strugglers Tsunami Queens at 11h30 before UWC take on Tshwane University of Technology at 15h00.
NETBALL: Back To Business
After a successful Western Cape inter-provincials championships last weekend, where they won numerous team and individual trophies, Cape Town Netball Federation gets back to business this weekend with some serious action: all eight sub-districts across the metro will continue hosting their own league activities.
RUGBY: Full Force Fun
The Varsity Cup may have ended, with Stellenbosch side Maties narrowly losing out to UP’s Tukkies (great game, guys!), but the rugby fun isn’t over yet. Since the Easter Weekend, club rugby in the Western Province has been in full force, and more mouth-watering clashes are in store this weekend. Among them: Tygerberg will host Paarl; UCT travel to Hamlets; and Hamilton will welcome the Villagers on Saturday.
So…Any top matches that we missed? Any serious or silly sporting events we should keep an eye on? Get in touch – and tell us all about it.
