The up-tempo game between Stellenbosch and Hellenic was one of the highlights of the Bayhill Cup thus far, and drew one of the biggest crowds surrounding the D Field behind the stadium.

The Bayhill Cup is bringing out some fantastic footballing performances – and the up-tempo last 16 game between Stellenbosch and Hellenic had more than its fair share of those.

The game drew one of the biggest crowds surrounding the D Field behind the stadium, and they weren’t disappointed.

The initial stages were plagued by unforced errors that never led to real opportunities in front of goal. The one chance after that led to a foul inside the Hellenic box, which was skilfully tucked away by Roy-Keane Avontuur, a player who has already made a few appearances in the DStv Premiership team.

The Atlantis Express again added to his tally with an exquisite goal from the corner, leaving the crowd (and the field) in awe, and helped to seal a Stellenbosch victory in the end to book their place in the quarterfinals.

Shortly after the victory over Hellenic, we caught up with the marksman himself who was all smiles and willing to share his assessment and experience.

“I started playing football for Atlantis Atletico at the age of five, where my father coached me,” he said. “I played there for five or six years and then I moved to Hellenic – the club I just played against. That’s where I grew as a player and where I made a name for myself.”

So what about that amazing second goal?

‘Honestly, it was a fluke,” the Stellenbosch assassin smiled. “But we take it as it comes.”

Stellenbosch remains unbeaten in the tournament. They are now as far as the quarter finals having overcome Wits University  by a 4-0 scoreline.
