Provincial athletes and coaches were given world-class training and mentoring when the Western Province Athletics hosted a “Born to be Elite” programme recently.
Born 2 Be Elite, is a vision to build a long-term programme that creates an international “speed” community, with South Africa having been identified as the initial focus area for the initiative. The program is designed to identify and develop the next generation of Sprinters and Coaches. Participating coaches and athletes will have the opportunity to be mentored & trained by top Olympian medallists.
The programme intends to provide a platform to achieve highest level of excellence through the latest technology, high performance support from Global Sport Management & Events Group, world class knowledge from three-time Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin & Olympian and former American record holder Dr Sharrieffa Barksdale.
Born to be Elite founder Dr Barksdale said: “The aim for the programme is to develop communities, athletes, coaches, resources and infrastructure. The long-term programme is to cultivate grassroots sports programmes in community hubs, as well as developing an elite squad.”
