The Western Province Athletics (WPA) will celebrate the Youth Month in style this weekend when they host a youth challenge with a difference.
Hundreds of school children from as young as those in Grade 1 up to those in matric from all cultures and backgrounds are expected to flock the Parow Athletics Track on Saturday to take part in the 5km and 3km Youth Challenge for school kids.
According to Thabiso Mazosiwe, WPA communications officer, in addition to celebrating the Youth Month, the aim of the event is to build better and stronger relationships with schools in the Western Cape communities, to identify young, up and coming talent in the disadvantaged communities and to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
“As June 2019 marks 25 years of democracy in South Africa and the start of Youth Month, we at the Western Province Athletics (WPA) are undertaking this unique initiative for the Western Cape kid,” Mazosiwe said.
About 2 000 children are expected to participate and the event starts at from 9am until 2pm. Primary School children from Grade 1 to Grade 7 will take part in a 3km run while those in Grade 8 to Grade 12 will be involved in a 5km run. Registration is at 8am and the 5km run starts at 9am while the 3km run will kick-off an hour later.
Mazosiwe added that there will be lucky draw prizes, and the schools with the most participating entries will also win prizes. First place will get a prize to the value of R7500, second place will walk away with a prize to the value of R5000, and third place will take home a prize to the value of R2500 (no cash).
The High School Team Prize (5km), will be the school with the first pupils across the finish line (10 male, 10 female) receiving goodie bags. The Primary School Team Prize (3km), will be the school with the first pupils across the finish line (5 male, 5 female) receiving goodie bags.
Entry for kids is free and parents can enter the 3km run for R30 per person.
